The flexibility, capability and value for money that a virtual IT infrastructure delivers makes for a compelling strategy, viewed from either the business or technical perspective. Virtual Infrastructure specialist Transam, in partnership with VMware, DataCore and CommVault, is presenting a unique view on how the latest products from VMware, applied to storage and backup, will make a difference to Virtual Infrastructure.

The session will introduce you to three key new technologies being announced by VMware: DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduling), High Availability and VCB (VMware Consolidated Backup).

If you are new to VMware we have put together a comprehensive agenda including an Earlybird session to introduce you to the technology, identify the business and operational benefits and how to apply them in the real world.

If you are an existing VMware user or have attended a previous Transam Virtual Infrastructure briefing, then you can miss the earlybird session and join us at 10:00 to hear about the latest developments in the MAJOR new release of ESX server and VirtualCenter plus exciting complementary technologies to optimise your investment in Virtual Infrastructure.

The session will include a detailed look at DataCore’s storage virtualisation, appropriate to organisations that have already deployed SAN solutions as well as those that have yet to do so. DataCore does for storage what VMware does for servers.

The Solution to Increasing Demands on your Data Centre?
Fewer servers. The most critical computing challenge today is containing the growth of servers in the data centre. VMware software can consolidate your servers by as much as 20 to 1. You can cut costs, greatly improve server utilisation, free existing IT staff to do more and dynamically map computing resources to business needs.

What's New in VMware ESX3?

VMware ESX3 introduces key new technologies that will make a huge difference to the VI environment:

  • Distributed Resource Scheduling (DRS) dynamically allocates server resources by proactively monitoring VMs and moving to different server if appropriate;

  • High Availability reactively restarts VMs if down due to unforeseen failure;

  • VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) allows third party backup solutions to provide granular recovery at the infrastructure rather than VM level - a major benefit to systems administrators. We will discuss consolidated backup in some detail;

  • New Licensing Structure;

  • 16GB RAM per Virtual Machine enables virtualisation on new workloads throughout the Datacenter;

  • 4-Way Virtual SMP allows virtual machines to be configured with four processors to handle more demanding applications;

  • NAS and iSCSI Support lowers cost of entry to advanced VMware capabilities and simplifies management with fully supported shared storage; and

  • Large-Scale, Unified Management of hundreds of ESX Server hosts, thousands of virtual machines and VirtualCenter Management Servers with a single client from any Windows PC or browser makes it easier to scale and manage virtual infrastructure.

Virtual Infrastructure Management Software
VMware VirtualCenter2 is virtual infrastructure management software for businesses that want to build cost-effective next generation computing environments and optimised data centres. VirtualCenter provides a central point of control for your data centre's virtual computing resources, driving flexibility, efficiency and responsiveness. VMware VirtualCenter allows you to:

  • Manage hundreds of servers from a single console;

  • Dynamically Move Workloads Across Distributed Physical Servers;

  • Instantly provision new servers with standardised templates;

  • Secure the environment with robust access control;

  • Perform hardware maintenance with zero downtime;

  • Monitor System Availability and Performance;

  • Automate Key System Administration Tasks.

Just how flexible are servers consolidated by VMware?
Most of us understand the basic premise of running multiple 'virtual machines on a reduced number of physical servers, but VMware offers so much more...

Reliability and Stability
Find out how an application running in a virtual machine can be more reliable than on a traditional server.
Availability
See how applications on virtual machines can be quickly and easily moved from one physical server to another, with applications running and users active. No more inconvenient downtime windows. We will also review the pros and cons of clustering within a virtual environment
Provisioning
Deliver new and stored applications in minutes, not weeks or months when new hardware has to be procured. Store libraries of test and development servers and make them instantly available without tying up valuable server resources when not in use.

Virtual Storage
Discover how VMware is capable of so much more when combined with a Storage Area Network (SAN). By combining these we therefore create a Virtual Infrastructure. The virtual storage layer will provide

Capacity and Provisioning - Present massive 2TB volumes to your applications, yet only consume the physical storage they require. Snapshots make point-in-time copies of datasets to present consistent data to development and test, backup, data mining and reporting servers.

Replication and Mirroring - Mirror data synchronously and/or asynchronously depending on your business requirements, locations and communications infrastructure.

Flexibility - Only buy as much capacity as your short-term requirements dictate. Scale when you need to. Mix high performance drives with lower cost high capacity drives to suit your requirements.

Value for Money - Consider deployment of Industry Standard hardware to provide storage services, rather than proprietary systems.

Leverage of Investment - Discover how to re-use your investment in storage software, even when it is time for a technology refresh.

Note - Virtual Servers can be used with traditional as well as virtual storage. We will present and discuss both. However the synergies of virtualisation at all layers can realise significant benefits.

This event is for you if you are

* interested in the powerful features of VMware ESX3;

* looking to optimise your data centre;

* familiar with the basics of server virtualisation but want to learn more;
* looking into cost effective, flexible DR and business continuity solutions;
* looking into data replication solutions;
* already deploying SANs but want to enhance their functionality;
* considering deploying shared storage solutions, including SAN/NAS.

Transam has developed a template proposal for the deployment of a Virtual Infrastructure. Request your free copy today.
